Kassandreia

Kassandreia is the administrative and commercial capital of the Kassandra peninsula, built just after the canal of Nea Potidea that separates the "first leg" of Halkidiki from the mainland. It is approximately 45 kilometers from Thessaloniki and serves as the natural "gateway" and service center for all the seaside resorts of Kassandra. Despite its modern, vibrant character, the town carries one of the most significant names of antiquity.

What Kassandreia is Known For

The ancient Kassandreia was founded in 316 BC by the king of Macedonia Cassander, on the site of ancient Potidea, and took its name. It was one of the strongest cities of Macedonia. Today’s Kassandreia, formerly Valtas, is the commercial center of the area, with shops, services, a local market, and all the essentials for visitors to the nearby beaches. It is close to the archaeological sites of Potidea and ancient Mendi, famous in antiquity for its wine.
