At the cape **Posidi**, on the western edge of **Kassandra**, next to the sandy tongue that enters the sea, lies one of the most important sanctuaries of Halkidiki: the **sanctuary of Poseidon**, considered the **oldest known sanctuary of the god** in the Greek world. The area belonged to the territory of ancient **Mendi**, a city famous in antiquity for its wine.
History and findings
Excavations revealed successive phases of worship spanning over half a millennium:
