Nea Kallikratia is the first seaside town of Halkidiki as you descend from Thessaloniki, just 40 kilometres from the city centre. Thanks to this location it serves as the closest "sea" for Thessaloniki's residents and stays lively both in summer and on weekends throughout the year — setting it apart from the seasonal resorts of the peninsulas.
The town was founded in 1922 by refugees from Kallikrateia of Propontis, who found similarities with their homeland in the landscape. This refugee origin has shaped its character, traditions and cuisine to this day, giving it a distinct cultural identity.
It is famous for its large Blue Flag beach, golden sand and shallow, clear waters — ideal for families with children. The busy seafront promenade lined with cafés, restaurants and taverns is the heart of town life, especially in the afternoons and at weekends.
In Nea Kallikratia you can enjoy:
The town's cuisine is built on fresh fish and seafood, with many fish tavernas right on the water, plus modern café-bars for a coffee or drink with a view. You'll also find traditional flavours with Asia Minor influences, a legacy of the refugee founders.
Its short distance from Thessaloniki (just ~40 km, around 35 minutes by car) and frequent KTEL bus connections make it one of the most easily reached destinations in Halkidiki — ideal even for a day out.
Ideal for families and anyone wanting the sea without a long drive. The main season is May–September, but thanks to its proximity to the city it stays lively year-round, especially on weekends, with open cafés and restaurants.
