From Belgrade to Halkidiki

How to Get There

Belgrade is just 600 km from Halkidiki (~6 hours by car). Halkidiki is a favorite summer destination for thousands of Serbians every year! Check our beaches.

By Car

Two main routes:

  • Via Niš and Skopje (recommended): Belgrade → E75 motorway → Niš → Skopje → Gevgelija/Evzoni (border) → Thessaloniki → Halkidiki. The fastest route (~600 km, 6 hours). The motorway is in good condition along its entire length.
  • Via Niš and Sofia: Belgrade → Niš → Dimitrovgrad → Sofia → Blagoevgrad → Kulata/Promachonas → Serres → Halkidiki (~650 km, 7 hours). An alternative if you prefer to avoid North Macedonia.

Check our car rental guide — having your own car is the best way to explore the peninsulas.

Important for drivers

  • Tolls: Serbia ~€15, North Macedonia ~€5, Greece ~€10
  • Fuel: Cheaper in Serbia, more expensive in Greece — fill up before the border
  • Green card: Verify that your insurance covers Greece and North Macedonia
  • Speed limits in Greece: 130 km/h motorway, 90 km/h outside built-up areas
  • Alcohol: 0.5‰ limit in Greece

Border Crossings

Two main options:

  • Gevgelija-Evzoni: The most popular, on the Skopje route. Operates 24/7. Expect waits Friday evening and Saturday morning (July-August: 2-3 hours at peak).
  • Kulata-Promachonas: Via Sofia. Operates 24/7. Less waiting than Evzoni.

Tip: Leave early in the morning (5-6 AM) to avoid border waits. Alternatively, travel Sunday evening when everyone else is heading back.

By Bus

Regular Belgrade-Thessaloniki coaches (€20-35, ~6 hours) from Belgrade bus station. In summer, some carriers offer direct routes to Halkidiki. From Thessaloniki, KTEL bus to Halkidiki (€8-15). See transport FAQ.

When You Arrive

Halkidiki has three peninsulas — Kassandra (livelier, closer), Sithonia (quieter, stunning beaches) and Athos (the Holy Mountain). Discover the best beaches of Kassandra or find accommodation to suit your taste — from affordable apartments to luxury hotels.

Tips for Serbian visitors

  • Currency: Euro (€) — exchange in Serbia or use ATMs in Greece (avoid border exchange offices)
  • Mobile: EU roaming — check your plan with your operator. Alternatively, buy a Greek SIM (Cosmote, Vodafone)
  • Language: English is spoken in tourist areas. Many restaurants have menus in Serbian
  • Check the weather forecast before leaving
  • Supermarkets: Lidl and Masoutis offer better prices than resort shops
  • Healthcare: Bring your European Health Insurance Card
