From Sofia to Halkidiki

How to Get There

Sofia is just 330 km from Halkidiki (~4 hours by car) — one of the most popular routes for Bulgarian tourists heading to the stunning beaches and traditional villages of Halkidiki. Because of the short distance, many Bulgarians even do three-day weekend breaks here.

By Car

Two main routes are available:

• Via Kulata-Promachonas (recommended): Sofia → Blagoevgrad → Struma motorway (E79) → Kulata border → Promachonas → Serres → Halkidiki. The fastest route (~4 hours). The Struma motorway is now fully completed up to Kulata, making the trip significantly faster and safer than it used to be.
• Via Petrich: Alternative via E85, slightly longer but less traffic on summer weekends.

Important info for drivers

• Bulgarian vignette: An electronic vignette is mandatory — buy it online at bgtoll.bg
• Green card: Check that your car insurance covers Greece
• Fuel: Fill up in Bulgaria — petrol is ~30% cheaper than in Greece
• Speed limits in Greece: 130 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h outside built-up areas
• Alcohol: 0.5‰ limit in Greece

By Bus

Direct buses run Sofia → Thessaloniki (€15-25, ~4-5 hours) from Sofia Central Bus Station. From Thessaloniki you transfer to KTEL Halkidiki (€8-15, 1-2 hours depending on destination). See our transport FAQ for schedules.

Summer direct buses

During summer (June-September) some tourist companies offer direct Sofia–Halkidiki coaches to popular resorts (Kallithea, Nikiti). Check Sofia-based tour operators for available routes.

Border Crossing

The Kulata-Promachonas border operates 24/7. Key tips:

• Avoid Friday evening and Saturday morning (peak traffic)
• Best crossing times: early morning (6-8) or late evening
• EU citizens: ID card or passport
• Green card for your vehicle
• Average wait: 15-30 minutes (up to 2 hours at July-August peak)

When You Arrive

Halkidiki greets you with three unique peninsulas. Discover the beaches of Kassandra (the first leg, known for its lively nightlife), the serene beaches of Sithonia or the beaches of Ouranoupoli. Browse all available accommodation — from affordable apartments to luxury hotels.

Tips for Bulgarian visitors

• Currency: Euro (€) — exchange before the border for a better rate, or use ATMs in Greece (avoid border exchange offices)
• Mobile: Roaming is free in the EU with your Bulgarian operator (up to a data cap). Check your plan
• Language: English is spoken in tourist areas. Many restaurants have menus in Bulgarian
• Check the weather forecast before departing
• Shopping: Lidl and Masoutis supermarkets are noticeably cheaper than resort shops
• Healthcare: Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid in Greece
