From Sarajevo to Halkidiki

How to Get There

Sarajevo is 900 km from Halkidiki. Because of the distance, there are three clear options: fly (recommended, 4-6 hours door-to-door with layover), drive (~12 hours driving, ideal for a road trip), or bus (~20 hours, budget travel only).

By Plane (the recommended option)

There are no direct SJJ→SKG flights. Main connections:

• Via Vienna (Austrian Airlines): ~4-5 hours total, the best schedules
• Via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, Pegasus): ~5-7 hours total
• Via Belgrade (Air Serbia): ~4-6 hours total, often cheaper

By Car (road trip)

Sarajevo → Belgrade (~5.5h) → Niš → MK border → Skopje → Evzoni → Thessaloniki → Halkidiki. Total ~12 hours of driving, ideal if you want to explore the Balkans or arrive with a full car. See our car rental guide.

Important info for drivers

• Green card: Mandatory — Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and N. Macedonia are all outside the EU
• 3 borders: BA→RS (Serbia), RS→MK, MK→GR — all 24/7 but add 1.5-3 hours combined
• Fuel: Cheaper in transit countries — fill up before Greece
• Stopover: Consider an overnight in Belgrade or Niš to break up the drive

By Bus (budget option)

Sarajevo-Belgrade (~7h), Belgrade-Thessaloniki (~10h), then KTEL. Total ~20 hours with transfers — recommended only on a tight budget. Total cost ~€50-80.

When You Arrive

Halkidiki has 3 peninsulas — if it's your first time, try Sithonia for quiet or Kassandra for a cosmopolitan vibe. Check the best beaches of Sithonia or available accommodation.

Tips for visitors from Sarajevo

• Flying recommended: For >800 km, the time saving is worth the cost
• Currency: Euro (€) in Greece — exchange BAM in Sarajevo or use ATMs
• Mobile: Bosnia is outside the EU. Roaming is usually expensive — buy a Greek SIM
• Travel insurance: Essential due to non-EU status (EHIC does NOT cover you)
