From Skopje to Halkidiki

How to Get There

Skopje is the closest foreign capital to Halkidiki — just 300 km and 3.5 hours of driving. It's the perfect distance for holidays, even a quick three-day break without exhaustion. Discover the beaches and three peninsulas waiting for you.

By Car

One main route, in excellent condition:

  • Route: Skopje → A1 motorway → Veles → Gevgelija → Evzoni (border) → Polykastro → Thessaloniki → Halkidiki
  • Road condition: Full motorway across both North Macedonia and Greece
  • Vehicle: Any standard car works (no 4x4 needed)

Check our car rental guide. Tolls: ~€5 in N. Macedonia + ~€10 in Greece = €15.

Important info for drivers

  • Green card: Mandatory — N. Macedonia is outside the EU. Confirm it covers Greece
  • Fuel: Cheaper in N. Macedonia than in Greece — fill up before the border
  • Speed limits in Greece: 130 km/h motorway, 90 km/h outside built-up areas
  • Alcohol: 0.5‰ limit in Greece

Gevgelija-Evzoni border crossing

Operates 24/7. Because N. Macedonia is outside Schengen, there's a double check (exit NM + enter Greece). Tips:

  • Avoid Friday 16:00-22:00 and Saturday 06:00-12:00 (peak times)
  • Best window: morning 5-7 or afternoon after 14:00
  • EU / N. Macedonian citizens: ID card or passport
  • Average wait: 15-30 minutes off-peak (1-2 hours at July-August peak)

By Bus

Direct buses Skopje-Thessaloniki (€10-15, ~4 hours) from Skopje Bus Station. From Thessaloniki, KTEL Halkidiki bus (€8-15, 1-2 hours). See transport FAQ.

When You Arrive

Because you're so close, Halkidiki is ideal for repeat visits. First time? Try the beaches of Kassandra (closest peninsula) or the best beaches of Sithonia. For food, the tavernas in Nea Moudania are the first natural stop after Thessaloniki. Find accommodation for every budget.

Tips for North Macedonian visitors

  • Currency: Euro (€) — exchange MKD in Skopje for a better rate, or use ATMs in Greece
  • Mobile: N. Macedonia is outside the EU so roaming applies. Check your plan or buy a Greek SIM (Cosmote, Vodafone)
  • Language: English is spoken in tourist areas. Many restaurants accept Macedonian menus
  • Check the weather forecast before leaving
  • Supermarkets: Lidl and Masoutis are much cheaper than resort shops
  • Healthcare: Travel insurance recommended due to non-EU status
