The Afanis Custom in Metaggitsi is one of the most impressive Easter events in Halkidiki and a reason to visit the inland in spring, rather than just the coasts in summer.
The locals build a huge pyramid-shaped pile of dry branches in the village square and set it on fire during the Easter celebrations. The flames rise in the darkness and around it, a feast is held with traditional music, dancing, and local delicacies. The custom has roots connected to the Resurrection and the burning of winter — an act of renewal.
