Halkidiki has three peninsulas, over 550 km of coastline, and 70+ villages. If you're coming for the first time, smart planning transforms the experience. This guide is written by locals and updated every season.
Halkidiki isn't a small Greek island you "see in three days." It's an entire region in Northern Greece, with three distinct peninsulas — Kassandra, Sithonia, and Athos — that look like fingers reaching into the Thermaic Gulf. Each has its own character, crowd, and pricing.
For first-time visitors, the appeal is twofold: easy access (just 70 km from Thessaloniki's "Makedonia" airport) and massive variety — from luxury resorts at Sani to unmarked exotic beaches at Sarti.
The biggest decision. There's no right answer — only the right one for you.
For deep comparison, see Kassandra vs Sithonia or the 3-way comparison.
The "real" season is 15 June — 15 September. The peak is 1-25 August, when everything is packed and prices jump +60% vs June.
| Month | Sea temp | Crowds | Prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | 19-21°C, a bit cold | Few | € |
| June | 22-24°C | Moderate | €€ |
| July-August | 25-27°C | Heavy | €€€€ |
| September | 24-26°C | Moderate | €€ |
| October | 20-22°C | Few | € |
Local tip: September is the hidden gem of the season. Warm sea, comfortable beaches, restaurants without waits, prices -30%. Watch out though: after 15 September many Sithonia beach bars close.
Thessaloniki airport (SKG) is the main gateway, with direct flights from most European capitals. From there:
If driving overland, see guides from Sofia, from Bucharest, from Belgrade, from Skopje.
Minimum suggested: 7 days. Fewer and you'll feel rushed. If you only have a few days, stick to one peninsula.
Kallithea, Hanioti, or Pefkohori. Organized beaches, plenty of English-menu restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies.
Afytos (Kassandra), Nikiti, or Vourvourou (Sithonia).
Sani, 5-star hotels, private villas.
Pefkohori, Sarti. See also camping and budget tips.
For 7 days, 2 people, mid-range (July-August):
Total: ~€1800-3200. For cheaper options see the budget guide.
Absolutely. Crime rate is very low. The only "scams" you might meet are tourist traps in restaurants — see scams to avoid.
Not mandatory, but without one the experience is drastically limited. Buses run, but rarely to small beaches. See the without-car guide.
Yes, especially those in tourism. In remote villages (Athos, inland), less so. Basic Greek words always help.
No — entry is forbidden to women (the "avaton" rule). But they can take a cruise around the peninsula's tip and see monasteries from the sea (500 m off the coast).
Yes, especially in July-August. Mosquitoes exist but aren't aggressive.
For the "wow factor," Karidi. For comfort with kids, Kallithea. See also top Sithonia beaches.
