Sithonia: The Complete Guide

Sithonia: The Natural Beauty of Halkidiki

Sithonia, the middle "finger" of Halkidiki, is the greenest and most peaceful destination in the region. Dense pine forests cascade down to the sea, hidden coves conceal turquoise waters, and villages retain their authentic character. If Kassandra is the party peninsula, Sithonia is where nature lovers come to decompress.

Villages of Sithonia

  • Nikiti: The "gateway" to Sithonia. The old village with stone houses and narrow streets is one of Halkidiki's prettiest. Famous for beekeeping — try the local thyme honey. Good selection of tavernas and shops.
  • Neos Marmaras: The largest town, built amphitheatrically above its harbor. You'll find supermarkets, pharmacies, ATMs, and many restaurants. Porto Carras resort is nearby.
  • Sarti: A large sandy beach stretching endlessly with views of Mount Athos. Lively village center, ideal for families. Great beach bars and water sports.
  • Vourvourou: A serene bay dotted with small islands (Diaporos being the largest). Perfect for kayaking, SUP, and boat trips. The water is impossibly calm.
  • Porto Koufo: The largest natural harbor in the Aegean, surrounded by rocky cliffs. A fishing village with excellent fresh-fish tavernas. Wonderfully isolated.
  • Toroni: Archaeological ruins and a gorgeous beach in one spot. The ancient fortress overlooks a long stretch of golden sand.

Top Beaches

  • Kavourotrypes (Orange Beach): Small rocky coves with white sand and pines reaching the waterline — the most photographed beach in Halkidiki. Arrive early in summer or you won't find space.
  • Karidi: Shallow turquoise waters in a sheltered cove, perfect for children and snorkeling. Near Vourvourou.
  • Lagonisi: A hidden paradise accessible via a dirt road. Pristine sand, clear water, minimal crowds even in August.
  • Fava Beach: Two semicircular bays that look like natural swimming pools, framed by rocky headlands.
  • Tigania Beach: Small caves, rock formations, and an exotic atmosphere. Access involves a short walk from the parking area.

Where to Stay by Vibe

  • Peace and quiet: Vourvourou, Porto Koufo, Kalamitsi
  • Family-friendly: Sarti, Nikiti (good facilities, shallow beaches)
  • Convenience and amenities: Neos Marmaras (shops, restaurants, nightlife)
  • Romantic escape: Toroni, small Vourvourou studios with sea views

Driving the Coastal Road

The Sithonia coastal road is an experience in itself. Start from Nikiti, head down the east coast (Vourvourou, Sarti), round the tip at Porto Koufo, and climb back up the west coast (Toroni, Neos Marmaras). Total loop: approximately 100 km. Budget a full day if you want to stop at beaches. The road is paved but narrow in places — drive carefully and enjoy the pine-scented journey.

Practical Tips

  • Fill up on fuel at Nikiti or Neos Marmaras — gas stations are sparse in southern Sithonia
  • Mobile signal can be weak in remote beach areas
  • Many beaches have no facilities — bring water and snacks
  • The western coast gets better sunsets; the eastern coast has morning sun
