The most affordable option. Buses depart from the KTEL Halkidikis bus station in Thessaloniki (68 Karakasi Street, east of the city centre).
| Destination | Duration | Cost | Departures/Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kassandra (Kallithea) | 1.5-2 hours | €12-14 | 6-8 in summer |
| Sithonia (Nikiti/Neos Marmaras) | 2-2.5 hours | €13-15 | 4-6 |
| Ouranoupoli | 2.5-3 hours | €14-15 | 3-5 |
Important: KTEL does not stop at SKG airport. You must first reach the city centre (airport bus 01X, €2, 45 minutes) or take a taxi to the KTEL station (€15-20).
The most convenient option, especially from the airport. Your driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign.
Taxis are available at the airport but more expensive than pre-booked transfers.
The ideal choice if you want to explore freely. Agencies at SKG airport include Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Enterprise, and locals (Auto Union, Avance). Rates: €25-50/day depending on season.
Driving tips: Roads are generally good. Gas stations close early in small villages — fill up on the main road. Parking is free almost everywhere except Ouranoupoli centre in peak season.
Summer (June–September) for beaches and swimming. July–August is peak. May, early June, or September give great weather with fewer crowds and 30–50% lower prices.
Fly to Thessaloniki (SKG), then 1–2 hours by car. Car rental from ~€25/day. Alternatively bus (KTEL Halkidiki), but schedules are limited. Detailed routes in /from guides.
Kassandra: lively, family-friendly, more touristy. Sithonia: quieter, more exotic, better nature. Athos: remote, ideal for tranquility. Browse /listings — book directly with owners, no booking fees.
Highly recommended. Beaches and villages are spread out, buses are sparse. If you skip the car, pick accommodation near a popular resort (Kallithea, Hanioti, Nikiti) with restaurants and beaches in walking distance.
