Gerakini

Gerakini is a seaside resort on Halkidiki's mainland coast, on the Toronaios Gulf, at a convenient distance (~1 hour) from Thessaloniki. It stands out for its long, shallow sandy beach and its distinctive industrial past.

The area is historically known for the magnesite mines of Gerakini, which for decades were a major source of activity and employment. Today Gerakini has become an organised tourist destination, while keeping this distinctive historical element that sets it apart from the other seaside villages.

Beaches

The main beach is long, sandy and organised, with shallow water ideal for families, loungers and water sports. Very close by (~5 km) is the popular Psakoudia beach, so swimming options are plentiful.

You'll find fish tavernas, cafés and beach bars by the sea, with a relaxed, family atmosphere rather than the intense pace of the big resorts on the legs.

Getting there and around

Its short distance from Thessaloniki makes it an easy choice even for a weekend. Nearby are Ormylia, Kalyves Polygyrou and ancient Olynthos — one of the most important archaeological sites in the region.
