Ancient Toroni and the Castle of Lekythos
In southern **Sithonia**, next to the current beach of Toroni, lie the ruins of one of the **richest and most important cities of Northern Greece** during the classical period. Ancient Toroni controlled the passage to the Toronean Gulf and was a strong naval power, with its name giving the designation to the entire gulf.
The Peninsula of Lekythos
**Lekythos** is the small rocky peninsula that closes the bay. In classical times, it was one of the **two acropolises** of ancient Toroni. Later, during the Byzantine years, a strong **castle** was built there, mainly using materials taken from the ancient acropolis — which is why today one can distinguish ancient architectural members integrated into the walls.
