Halkidiki in October is a different place — and for a certain kind of traveller, the best: a sea still holding 20-22°C in the first weeks, prices 30-40% lower, empty beaches and a light photographers wait for all year. We tell you what actually works, what closes, and who it suits.
Weather and sea
Days start at 20-24°C with sunshine dominating until mid-month; evenings cool noticeably (12-15°C — bring a jacket). The sea, warmed all summer, is more swimmable than in June: the first two weeks give proper swimming days, especially in sheltered bays like Karydi or Alykes.
What's open, what's closed
- Open: The villages with year-round life — Nikiti, Neos Marmaras, Nea Moudania, Ierissos, Polygyros — keep tavernas, cafés and supermarkets going. Kassandra keeps more open than Sithonia.
- Closed: Beach bars, water sports, seasonal hotels — most shutter by late September.
- Mount Athos cruises: Usually until mid-late October on reduced schedules.
What you can do that summer forbids
- Famous beaches, empty: Kavourotripes and Karydi without a soul — the experience that costs a 7:00 alarm in August.
- Mountain Halkidiki: Arnaia and Cholomontas slip into autumn colours — and the new honey harvest hits the shelves.
- Wine tourism: October = harvest; the local estates are at their liveliest.
- Hiking: The trails that scorch in July (see the 5 best trails) become a pleasure.
Practical
- Stay: Book in villages with winter life (Nikiti, Marmaras, Moudania, Ierissos) — not in purely seasonal resorts where you won't even find a bakery.
- Prices: 30-40% below August; many places negotiate for longer stays.
- 28 October: The national-holiday long weekend briefly lifts traffic and prices — book earlier.
Practical notes for international visitors
October is the shoulder-season gamble worth understanding: the first half still offers swimming (sea around 21-22°C, mostly sunny, a jacket for evenings), the second half is better planned as an active-and-food trip — grape harvest, hiking, empty coastal towns. Book in a year-round town (Nikiti, Neos Marmaras, Ierissos, Nea Moudania); in pure summer resorts even the bakery shuts by late September. Direct flights thin out towards month-end.
Frequently asked questions
Can you swim in October?
The first 1-2 weeks, yes — especially midday in sheltered bays. After mid-month it becomes a sport for the brave.
Kassandra or Sithonia in October?
Kassandra for more life and open shops, Sithonia for absolute quiet and nature. See the comparison — in October the scales tip further towards Kassandra than in summer.
