📍 Geography and character
Halkidiki: Three distinct peninsulas (Kassandra, Sithonia, Athos) shaped like a trident. It's part of mainland Greece — you arrive by car or bus without any ferry. Each peninsula has a completely different personality: Kassandra is cosmopolitan with nightlife, Sithonia is quieter and more natural, Athos is mainly the monastic zone with Ouranoupoli as your base.
Thassos: A single island, ~380 km². Access is by ferry (~45 minutes from Kavala-Keramoti). A more self-contained experience — once you're on Thassos, you can tour the whole island in 2-3 days. Lush vegetation, mountains, traditional inland villages.
🚗 Access — the most decisive factor
If you're coming from Sofia, Belgrade, Skopje, Bucharest or other Balkan cities, Halkidiki clearly wins:

- Thassos: You first need to reach Keramoti (near Kavala), then take the ferry. From Sofia that's +4.5 hours of driving + 45-minute ferry. From Belgrade +7.5 hours + ferry. More tiring with small children.
Worth knowing for drivers: the Thassos ferry charges separately for the car (~€20-30 with vehicle). If you want the flexibility to change regions, Halkidiki lets you do it without buying ferry tickets.
🏖️ Beaches — both stunning
Halkidiki: Has the most Blue Flag beaches in Greece (~100+), with 550 km of coastline. Huge variety — from organised beaches with beach bars (Kallithea, Possidi) to remote hidden gems (Sithonia, Kavourotrypes, Fava). Sithonia in particular is one of the most photogenic coastal areas in Greece.
Thassos: Famous for specific "star" beaches — Marble Beach (Saliara) with its white marble, Paradise Beach, Golden Beach (the biggest organised one, ideal for families), Aliki, Pefkari. Fewer in number than Halkidiki but exceptional in quality.
Verdict: If you love variety and want a different beach every day → Halkidiki. If you want a handful of unforgettable top-tier beaches → Thassos.
🏨 Accommodation and prices

🌙 Nightlife
- Halkidiki: Kassandra has lively nightlife (Hanioti, Kallithea, Paralia Bouka). Sithonia is more relaxed. Athos minimal.
- Thassos: Laid-back atmosphere. A few beach bars and tavernas. Not a party destination.
👨👩👧 For families with kids
Both excellent. Thassos has Golden Beach with shallow water and soft sand — possibly the single best beach for small children in northern Greece. Halkidiki offers more options — Siviri, Fava, Kallithea, Nikiti — all family-friendly with shallow waters.
Extra factor: Halkidiki is easier with a car packed full of kid stuff (pram, toys). No loading/unloading on ferries.
💑 For couples / honeymooners
Sithonia (Halkidiki) and Thassos are both top picks. Sithonia offers boutique view-resorts and secluded beaches like Fava. Thassos has island romance — small inland villages (Kazaviti, Panagia), sunsets at Marble Beach.
