Halkidiki enjoys over 290 sunny days a year — but a cloudy spell or an August afternoon shower won't ruin the holiday. There are caves, museums, wineries and warm tavernas waiting. Here's what to do when the beach can wait.
1. Go underground in a cave
The Petralona Cave is the No.1 rainy-day pick: stalactites, stalagmites and one of Europe's oldest human skulls, all underground and sheltered from the weather. The temperature inside stays steady year-round.
2. Visit a museum
The Fishing Boats & Tools Museum and the Folklore Museum of Nea Moudania tell the region's maritime and rural story, while the Museum of Asia Minor Culture keeps alive the memory of the refugees who built many of the area's villages.
3. Go wine tasting
Halkidiki's vineyards produce excellent wines. A winery visit with a tour and tasting is the ideal grey-day activity — indoors, warm and delicious.
4. A long lunch or brunch
Rain is the perfect excuse for an endless table. Pick one of the best tavernas for a mezes lunch, or start slow with brunch and specialty coffee in Kallithea, Nea Moudania or Neos Marmaras. Grab some local products for gifts too.
5. Day trip to Thessaloniki
An hour's drive and you're in a big city of museums, arcades, cafés and shopping. A day trip to Thessaloniki is the ideal rainy-day "plan B".
6. Relax or shop
Many large resorts offer spa, hammam and indoor pools — a wellness day instead of the beach. Or browse the pretty shops of Afytos or the market town of Polygyros, the county capital.
