Ask anyone who returns to Halkidiki year after year which of the three peninsulas is the most beautiful, and most will answer without hesitating: Sithonia. It's wilder than Kassandra, with pines running down to the water and turquoise coves that reinvent themselves every few kilometres. The only real problem is choosing — we've mapped over 60 beaches here alone. This guide lines them up, coast by coast, so you don't waste kilometres.
Northwest coast: Nikiti to Neos Marmaras
The most convenient zone for first-timers — asphalt everywhere, facilities, and sunsets over the Toroneos Gulf.
- Kastri: The classic organized choice near Nikiti — Blue Flag most years, shallow bottom, pines. Next door, free Mikro Kastri for those who want quiet.
- Lagomandra: Two kilometres of sand with a gently shelving bottom — some of west Sithonia's best sunsets.
- Paradisos: Near Neos Marmaras, relaxed and easy to combine with a stroll in the town.
Northeast coast: Vourvourou and the Diaporos gulf
The most photographed corner of Sithonia — shallow, sheltered sea scattered with islets.
- Karydi: White sand, pool-like water staying shallow for 60+ metres, sculpted rocks at the edges. The most famous beach of Vourvourou — in August arrive before 10:00.
- Livari: A shallow lagoon facing Diaporos island — this is also where you can rent a licence-free boat to tour the islets.
- Trani Ammouda: At Ormos Panagias, light sand and calm water — the Mount Athos cruises also depart from here.
East coast: from Kavourotripes to Sykia
Sithonia's postcard: granite rocks, orange hues and Mount Athos on the horizon.
- Kavourotripes / Portokali: The most "exotic" scene in Halkidiki — white rocks, turquoise water, a string of small coves. Reached by a path down; not for pushchairs and trolley umbrellas. Right next to it, Mega Portokali.
- Platanitsi: Sand and pristine water below Armenistis — the quieter alternative to Kavourotripes.
- Armenistis: Halkidiki's legendary campsite fronts one of the east coast's best beaches — day visitors welcome.
- Sarti: Three kilometres of sand facing Mount Athos, with full facilities in Sarti village — you always find space.
- Klimataria (Sykia): Organized but laid-back, in the bay of Sykia — beloved by those who want a taverna next to their towel.
The southern tip: Kalamitsi, Porto Koufo, Toroni
- Kalamitsi: Twin sandy coves with transparent water at the village of the same name — also a diving base.
- Porto Koufo: Greece's deepest natural harbour, enclosed by cliffs — fish tavernas by the water. For swimming, prefer the beaches around the bay.
- Toroni: Two kilometres of sand with the ruins of the Lekythos fortress at one end — history and swimming combined, at Toroni village.
- Tristinika: Long, mostly free, with a beach bar at one end — the golden mean between wild and convenient. Next door lies quiet Diaporti with its passage to Pounta islet.

Practical notes for Sithonia's beaches
Distances: From Thessaloniki, Nikiti is about 100 km (1h 40m) and Sarti about 130 km (2h+). The loop of the peninsula is ~110 km of coastal road — doable in a day, worth at least three.
Access: The main road is excellent asphalt. Many of the finest beaches, though (Kavourotripes, Spathies, Tourkolimnionas), involve a dirt road or a walk down — passable with care in a regular car.
Parking: At the famous beaches, car parks fill between 11:00-16:00 in July-August. Rule of thumb: before 10:30 or after 17:00.
When: June and September give you the same sea with half the people. September in particular is the regulars' secret — warm water, empty sand, open tavernas.
Boat: In Vourvourou you can rent a licence-free boat (30hp) to circle Diaporos — possibly the best "upgrade" to a beach day in Halkidiki.
Practical notes for international visitors
Sithonia is the choice for travellers who find the packaged side of Halkidiki too smooth: fewer hotel blocks, more nature, legendary campsites. Reckon on 1 hour 45 minutes from SKG airport to Nikiti — the road is well surfaced the whole way.
The insider window is September: the crowds have gone, the sea still holds 24-25°C, and even Karydi feels like a secret again. Come in high summer and the one rule that matters is arriving early — the car parks at the famous coves fill by mid-morning. Fuel up before heading into the southern tip; petrol stations thin out down there.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the most beautiful beach in Sithonia?
Kavourotripes wins the photos, Karydi wins the swimming. If you have just one day, combine them — they are about 40 minutes' drive apart.
How many days do I need for Sithonia's beaches?
Based in Nikiti or Sarti, 4-5 days cover the highlights: one for Vourvourou, one for the east coast (Kavourotripes-Platanitsi-Sarti), one for the southern tip (Kalamitsi-Porto Koufo-Toroni) and one for the west coast and its sunset.
Is Sithonia better than Kassandra for beaches?
For natural beauty and variety, yes — which is why most "top beach" lists are dominated by Sithonia. Kassandra wins on infrastructure and nightlife. Full breakdown in the Sithonia vs Kassandra comparison.
