In Halkidiki the best table is almost always right by the water. How a fish taverna by the sea works
Fresh fish is sold by the kilo, and the price shifts with the species and the day: a sea bream or sea bass runs around €40–55/kg, the prized cuts (dentex, red porgy) higher. Always ask the price and weight before you order. Around the fish, the whole table is built: fried calamari, marinated anchovies, grilled octopus, a crisp salad, tzatziki and a carafe of tsipouro or cold white wine.
- When it's freshest: the small harbours (Porto Koufo, Ormos Panagias, Neos Marmaras) land a daily catch — that's where the fish is best.
- Timing: for sunset, book a table for 19:30–20:00; in August the good ones fill up.
- Payment: cards almost everywhere, but keep a little cash too.
Sithonia's fishing harbours
Sithonia is the heart of fresh fish.
