The third "leg" of Halkidiki belongs to the monastic state of Mount Athos, but its secular side around Ouranoupoli offers wonderful, quiet beaches. Ouranoupoli is the gateway for cruises around Athos and the nearest port to the island of Ammouliani, with its exotic sandy bays (Alykes, Karagatsia). Nea Roda, Trypiti and Ierissos complete the picture with shallow waters and views of the Athos peak. This is an area for calm, nature and authenticity, away from the busier crowds.
